SHIPPING

Shipping in the U.S. generally runs $250. Costs include a health certificate, rabies vaccination, carrier, and airfare. Airfare varies somewhat depending on the airline chosen and and the shipping location. All kittens are current on vaccinations. The health certificate is $55, the rabies shot is $15, the carrier is $25, and shipping costs run around $110-$175. If you want to check on airline costs, call Continental 800-575-3335 or Delta 888-736-3738 and ask how much to ship a cat in the smallest size carrier (100 series) from PDX (Portland) to your destination. The cat and carrier will be under 10 lbs.

Delta and Continental have pet-safe shipping. Pets are kept in air-conditioned or heated facilities as soon as the flight ends so you don't have to worry so much about the weather. If the weather is too severe, they won't ship pets on that day. I socialize the kittens so that they are used to pet carriers and traveling and so that shipping is not overly stressful. Kittens can generally go home between 12 & 18 weeks. Kittens are like kids, each kitten develops at it's own rate. I make decisions on when kittens can go to their new homes individually. They need to have a large enough body size to withstand weather changes, and be independent, confident, well-socialized kittens so they can adapt comfortably to their new homes.

It is expected that kittens sold as pets will be neutered or spayed by six months of age. Papers will not be released until verification of spay/neuter is provided by your vet.

Munchkins & Napoleons

How do you choose?

If you want a easygoing, loving but playful cat that will tickle you each time you watch those short legs scamper, then a Munchkin, Napoleon or a Skookum is your choice.

A "standard" Munchkin has short legs, while a "nonstandard" Munchkin has long legs. Generally, there will be some of both in most litters. Skookums have the short legs of a Munchkin and the curly coats of the LaPerms. Munchkins and Skookums love to play and snuggle, and you'll be amazed as you see those short legs keep up with their long legged companions - they can hug those corners and gain ground.

So where did Munchkins and Skookums come from?

Like the LaPerm, Munchkins are a gift from Mother Nature. They came about as a result of spontaneous mutation through a gene similar to some of the dog breeds that have short legs. However, they don't have any of the spine problems that some of the short-legged dogs have, and like the LaPerms, are a healthy cat that began with hardy domestic cats.

Skookums are a cross between the Munchkin and LaPerm breed and are rare. In Munchkin litters, there will usually be some long-legged kittens (nonstandards). When breeding LaPerms to Munchkins, some of the kittens will have straight coats and some will have curly coats. So getting a kitten with both the curly coat and short legs requires some patience and a bit of luck. I think you will find, though, that they are worth the wait. I find the Skookums to be very sweet and very affectionate cats.

If you like the cuddly personalities of the Persian, but are tickled by cute, short legs and fall in love with darling round faces, then it sounds like a Napoleon is your cat.

Napoleons are a cross between the Persian/Himalayan/Exotic breeds and Munchkins. They have beautiful faces with lovely round eyes, thick plushy coats and stocky bodies. Like Munchkins, Napoleons are born with short and long legs, with some of both in most litters. They are sweet, loving cats and make lovable companions. For more information about this new breed, see http://www.napoleoncats.com/napcat.htm

Don't Overlook the Nonstandards!

In most litters of Munchkins and Napoleons, there will be some long-legged kittens known as Nonstandards. There may also be an occasional straight-coated LaPerm. The great thing about these cats is that they have the same personality characteristics as their standard siblings, and they often come in some great colors that you don't see in your everyday cats. They have the same good breeding that their shorter legged brothers and sisters have, so they are healthy and hardy as well as beautiful.

Sisters

And best of all, they usually cost a lot less.

If you are thinking about a companion cat for your standard kitten, consider a nonstandard brother or sister.
